The department of zoology is one of the finest department of Govt. Lahiri P.G. College. Since its inception in 1953, it has been educating animal sciences to students with all dedication to develop deep understanding of the subject. Being situated in tribal belt of Sarguja division of Chhattisgarh, is a biodiversity rich region, hence offers great opportunity to study flora and fauna of this region. Department of Zoology offers UG and PG courses. PG programmed has been started from 2014 and the course is designed to enable student’s expertise in subject and develop scientific orientation.The department has equipped laboratory to carry out practical and smart classroom with projector to facilitate smart teaching and learning process. Motive of the department is not only to educate subject but also to inculcate sense of moral responsibility for their society and nation among students.

The primary objective of the department is to impart quality education in the subject of Zoology as a basic science, The Department is having the following objectives:
- To provide quality education in a branch of Biological sciences i.e Zoology with different specializations.
- To facilitate Higher education & research in zoology.
- To provide quality education offering skill based programs and motivate the students for self employment in applied branches of Zoology.
- To inculcate the value based education and entrepreneurial skills among the students.
- To Inculcate the spirit of resource conservation and love for nature
- To conduct field studies and different projects of local and global interests.

Department of Zoology offer library facility in which students, faculty and staff can request books, articles and theses from library. This service is offered at no cost to students, faculty and Staff College providing online library facility N-list e-resources is a programme where selected collection of e-journal and e-books provided to the college after registration. It facilitates access to e-resource to students, researchers and faculty from college.
